Flowers for Grandpa Dan is a 20 page hardcover book containing a gentle story to help children understand Alzheimer’s disease (information provided by the Alzheimer’s Association).
Written by Connie McIntyre, the book features the flower watercolor illustrations of Louise McIntyre. Flowers for Grandpa Dan is a story in picture book format for adults and children to share. The story is a work of fiction based on my family’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease as well as on facts provided by the Alzheimer’s Association. The book includes, at the end, a page for parents and other adults on how to help children understand Alzheimer’s disease. This page for adults speaks to children’s emotional responses to the disease and encourages communication on the topic. These specific questions are addressed: Why is Grandma acting differently? Will my mom or dad get Alzheimer’s? Will I? How can I help?
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book and McIntyre note cards is donated to the Alzheimer's Association.
