Sandhills - Return to the Platte

Sandhill Cranes For millions of years, lesser sandhill cranes, arriving primarily from New Mexico and Texas, have fed, danced and preened along Nebraska's Platte River. Due to the diversion of 70% of the Platte's water, habitat for the cranes has been largely reduced to an 80 mile swatch in central Nebraska. Yet half a million cranes, each standing 3 ½ feet tall, can be seen there from March to early April, "staging" for their spring migration to Canada.

This card was created by John Mayer. He has been an observer of cranes and other waterfowl since his earliest years growing up near the Platte River.
