His usual subject is landscapes, with oil his preferred medium. He restores priceless art pieces and teaches art classes and workshops in the U.S. and Canada.

In a meditative mood he observes" "My painting centers around the flow of forces that shape the course of our world and the universe. The Midwestern prairie sharpens the focus in the meeting of earth and sky and that is the essence of what I'm trying to paint." "April Landscape" depicts one of Houlon's favorite sports in Buffalo County, Nebraska.
